Ambiguity in space.

I have sought to visually explore the west wales coastline and deconstruct the landscape in terms of pattern, processes, materials, colour and light and record my personal response and perception of this. I examined the area from a variety of perspectives, looking at the larger scale and at smaller, perhaps overlooked details, keeping photographic records from which I referred as well as working directly on site with sketchbooks. I considered the area in terms of place and space and explored how both could be portrayed – place being familiar, defined, framed, with clear signifiers to guide the viewer in contrast to space, being more ambiguous, abstract and expansile. Throughout this project I aimed to push my experimentation of different styles of painting and printmaking, working in both figurative and abstract ways, in different scales and with a variety of surfaces and processes to create my own personal representation of this area as I see and feel it. I reflected the processes of the area in the mark -making processes and used materials including salt, water, sand, and clay , to reflect the materials associated with the area , in combination with more traditional materials including ink ,wax and acrylic paint.

The Welsh coastline has inspired me since early childhood and I therefore have a wealth of memories and emotional responses to different experiences on which to begin. I have also  been inspired by Terry Setch who worked often in large scale with mixed media and has described the coastline as a ‘playground’, something with which I can relate . I also took great inspiration from Brendan Stuart Burns who similarly explores pattern, light, materials and colour and his emotional responses to one small area of the Pembrokeshire coast.  His abstract expressionist style of working is something I have tried to emulate in ‘ Ambiguity in space’.

Ambiguity in Space is one of three paintings inspired by the Welsh Coast. If you would like to enquire about purchasing one please contact us through our Contact Link.
