The making of a handmade book is a wonderful and satisfying craft that is accessible to all.
From the simplest notebook to the most creative artist’s sketchbook, each book can be truly unique. Whether you would like a personalised diary or journal, a book for recipes, photos, poetry or memoirs, or a small special gift for a friend, from the easiest of beginnings an exquisite piece of craft work can be achieved by all.
Two, Three or Four Day Course – You will build your skills together, each day learning new, basic techniques which make this craft so rewarding. There will be opportunities for individual creativity and experimentation with more advanced techniques. In the atmospheric setting of the former ‘Top Secret’ GCI Radar Station RAF Ripperston, and under the tutoring of Jane & John Dixon who have renovated these wonderful historic buildings, you will make your very own collection of handmade books, learning a skill that can give you a lifetime of pleasure.
DAY 1
Make your own Handmade Accordion Books and Pamphlet Book. Basic bookmaking styles and techniques will include the making of two books on your first day, an Accordion book and a 5-Hole, handmade Pamphlet Book. The Session will run from 10:00 – 16:00 – please bring a packed lunch
DAY 2
Make your own Wrap Around Book. Choose from our selection of materials to create your own unique handmade Photo Book.
DAY 3
Sequencing & the Handmade Book. For Day three you will need a selection of your own photographs, drawings, writings or recipes etc etc etc For the purpose of this assignment you will need a minimum content of 20 items to choose a final 10-15 for your book. There is also an option to make your first artists book – an Origami Book.
DAY 4
Handmade Artists Books. Continuing on from Day Three, you will make a selection of Artists Books from either your own ‘brought along’ work or choose your content from our ‘Rubbish to Art’ Box

All tools required are supplied for the duration of the course but should you prefer to bring your own, please do so.
