John grew up with a love of photography, learning the basics of taking and developing traditional film in his youth. My wedding present from him was a camera. I used it for holiday snaps for thirty years. Then, ten years ago, I started to use it in earnest when we were sailing around the southern coasts of Ireland. The concentration helped me to ignore the worrying niggles of the ever changing weather. The problem was I didn’t know how to get the best out of it. We came home and I decided to go to a photography night class. Somehow, I ended up doing a full time BA Hons Degree in Fine Art Photography. That further developed into a love and fascination for all aspects of art and I am now, following another three years at Carmarthen School of the Arts, enjoying creativity through nearly all the disciplines of art; Photography, Painting, Drawing, Printmaking, Bookmaking and Ceramics. As a Fine Art Photographer I am extending my vision using my photography as a starting place for my creative art work. I am loving every minute of my time spent in this way. John has now started creating woodcuts out of his film and digital images. The most brilliant thing about it is that, through the use of the camera, the creative disciplines are open to anyone who can take a picture. Nowadays that IS just about everyone – with a camera or a phone, art through photography has become accessible to everyone. Although most of the images that are taken today will end up in a file somewhere on a computer or just sitting on a phone or tablet, we like to think that some might be the inspiration for a unique piece of art.
